Plastic Free July

29/6/2021

Plastic Free July® is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution – so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities.

There are lots of bits of plastic littering the lovely streets of Enniscorthy, what can you do to help?
- Buy less stuff wrapped in plastic
- If you need to buy it, make sure to put the wrapping in the bin
- Make sure your wheelie bin is secure and the lid is closed properly - you'd be surprised how much plastic can get blown around from household bins.
- Organise a small street clean! It can be a big or small and area as you like, every little helps!

Covid-19

So, we had been doing some really great work before all the madness started back in March. Since November 2019 we had been working with a local school on the mapping project and were all set to have a 'mapping day' in Enniscorthy with the students in April 2020.

Sadly Covid-19 interrupted our plans for the event, well all our plans for 2020 really, but thats ok.

The team had taken a little break over the past few months as we felt that people had too much on their plates. However, we are going to start looking at what we can do now and over the next couple of months to help move the work along.

Stay Safe!

Climate Strike - Action for Students

21/9/2019

On Friday the 20th of September, the Enniscorthy Sustainable Town project kicked off with its first public event. The project team hosted students from Colaiste Bride and Meanscoil Gharman for a workshop to find innovative local solutions on climate change and sustainability.

The event which took place in The Presentation Centre gave the students a chance to give their perspective on the changes we face and the action that they believe need to happen.
The students were asked to outlined some of the positive things they like about the town which included the natural walks, the play areas, the flowers planted around the town, the biodiversity, lots of activities and facilities, the work the council staff do to clean the town every day.

The project team were inspired by the students passion to bring about positive changes, which is something which echoes the sentiments expressed by the climate strikes across the country and internationally.

We have been having lots of conversations over the past few months and have decided that we want to take a step back and make sure that the project is grounded in the local community here in Enniscorthy.
Rather than just go ahead with all our own ideas of how this might work, we are going to host some workshops in September/October to get input from local business, community groups and children to help us shape the activities for 2020 and beyond.
The project will focus on three key areas in the coming year,
Education, Nature and Waste these areas can help us cover a number of the sustainable development goals and are also areas which could provide some interesting, achievable and inclusive action for us to work on in the coming year.

We have our first pledges!

We are delighted to have Enniscorthy Enterprise and Technology Centre join us in our early stages of development. The Centre have set up a community garden / biodiversity planting around the grounds!

We are also joined by Holos skincare, who have really embraced Goal 12 on sustainable consumption and production. They are going packaging free on orders and are aiming for zero waste to landfill in the production of their products!!
Here are some of their activities

"We sell online and have recently invested in a plastic free packaging system. Any plastic/bubblewrap/
unsustainable packing product we receive, we re-use rather than throw away and we ask our customers to re-use. Our business neighbours deliver used boxes and shredded paper for packing to us.Moving forward all new product packaging will be plastic free (or as much as is possible).
We use ingredients made from plants in our products. These come in little glass bottles and smell devine. When the bottles are empty, we pass these onto a Sensory Therapist who works with children and adults who have extra needs.
We buy our ingredients from sustainable farmers all over the world and only work with suppliers that have vegan, cruelty-free ethics at the fore.
We manufacture in small batches so avoid waste." - Niamh from Holos
